Fresh Produce and Fish for Colorado Springs Restaurants

Who We Are

In December of 2013, after extensive research and site visits to view current aquaponics operations, Gavin Vitt committed to opening Daily Harvest Aquaponics. He formulated a business plan and contracted with an aquaponics consultant to design what is, in his opinion, the most productive, bio-secure, and efficient “controlled environment agriculture” aquaponics farm in Colorado. Farming, and the green industry in general, have long been a part of the Vitt family tradition.

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a food production system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.

What are the Benefits of Aquaponics?

  • Aquaponics uses 90% less water than traditional farming
  • Dense stocking and planting maximize space and yield – neither fish nor plants must fight for resources so growth is exponential
  • Longer shelf life with living lettuce
  • Aquaponics is completely all natural and pesticide free
  • Fertilizer from fish (cold blooded) does not carry E Coli or Salmonella like fertilizers from warm blooded animals might
  • No soil means no soil borne diseases
  • Produce and fish are truly local and local means fresh with reduced transportation requirements
  • Controlled growth environment yields consistent output with no off season
  • Excellent crop and fish diversity that is truly sustainable
  • Fish produce CO2 and plants need CO2
  • Fewer transportation costs, economizing fuel consumption
  • Nutrient-rich water helps produce grow faster
